Weekend barge cruise

There is something instantly relaxing about being by the water and surrounded by nature – making a short cruise the perfect option for recharging your energy and getting away from it all.  Why not spend the weekend with friends? – arrive after work on Friday, enjoy cruising on the boat and discovering Reims on Saturday and then spend Sunday exploring the vineyards before heading home.

Discover a different side of Champagne from the canal

Or if you’re a frequent visitor to Champagne region the itinerary gives you the freedom to visit a favourite producer to re-stock your wine cellar or discover a new champagne house – we’ll be happy to give you some suggestions of our favourites for either a cellar tour or tasting.

Leave the car behind

Once you arrive at the barge there is no need to get in the car again until it’s time to head home.  On Day 1 you can enjoy champagne tastings at family owned producers just a short walk from the barge and as we stop in the centre of Reims on Day 2 again you don’t need a vehicle to explore.  Or if you want to explore further afield and are feeling more active choose our bike hire option (electric bikes available too!).   Dinner options are close by to – on the night you arrive dine at an excellent restaurant just 10 minutes walk away and on night 2 enjoy dinner on the barge.

You are welcome to arrive at the barge and check-in any time from 16.00hr (although you can drop your bags off earlier if you wish).  You’ll be welcomed aboard by your hosts and can then either spend the afternoon relaxing aboard or head out to explore.

Day 1 - Evening

A great option for dinner this evening is the Relais de Sillery, an excellent restaurant just 10 minutes walk from the barge.  Alternatively you can book a table d’hotes dinner aboard and enjoy dining on the top deck of the barge.

Or hop in the car and drive to Reims (approximately 15 minutes) where you’ll find everything from buzzing bistros to luxurious Michelin fine dining – we’ll be happy to offer recommendations on where to book a table to suit your preferences.

Day 2 - Morning

A feast of fresh croissants, gorgeous pastries, baguette, fresh fruits, yogurts and cereal will be waiting when you get up this morning.

Around 10.00hr we’ll start the engine, take off the mooring ropes and start our cruise along the canal.

As the barge travels at only around 6 kilometres per hour (3 miles per hour), there’s time to look around and take in the tranquility of the countryside sliding past.  We’ll pass through locks only just wide enough to accommodate Serenity and even sail on a small aquaduct over a river!

While we’re travelling the crew are here to look after you – relax on deck, enjoy a complimentary bottle of champagne, take a dip in the jacuzzi or join Captain Claire in the wheelhouse, you can even try steering the barge!

Around 13.00hr your buffet lunch is served on deck – typically local and regional cheeses, pâtes and charcuterie accompanied by tasty salads and fresh bread.  And if you have still got room, there’s a light dessert to follow.

Day 2 - Afternoon

After lunch we stop at a quaiside in the centre of Reims – from here is just a short walk to discover the highlights of this historic city.  Some ideas for the afternoon include:

  • taking a cellar tour at Veurve Clicquot, Taittinger or Pommery (booking ahead strongly recommended);
  • exploring the gothic Cathedral;
  • visiting one of the cities museums;
  • discovering the city’s history on a self-guided walking tour; or
  • visiting the Musée de la Reddition, where the surrender that ended WW2 was signed

You’ll need to be back aboard the barge by 18.00hr so that we can continue our cruise.  We’ll quickly leave the city and head back into the green, verdant countryside before arriving around 1 hour later at our final destination in the village of Courcy.

Alternatively if you prefer we can continue our cruise straight onto Courcy, arriving around 14.00hr.

Day 2 - Evening

Our final destination is a quaiside near the village of Courcy.  Once the barge is tied up one of the group will be driven back to Sillery to pick up your vehicle – or if you prefer this can wait until the following morning.

There are not any restaurants very close to the barge this evening so if you’d prefer not to get in the car we can offer a range of menu options including light meals, BBQ or 3 course dinner aboard.   Alternatively you can enjoy a meal at a lovely village restaurant (around 10 minutes drive) or drive back to Reims for dinner (around 20 minutes drive).

Day 3 - Morning

With a midday check-out there is no rush this morning and you have time to linger over a relaxed breakfast if you wish.
